Authors For Fireys

Last week, authors flocked to Twitter to join an auction to raise money for firefighters in Victoria, thanks to organisers and authors Emily Gale and Nova Weetman. Auction items ranged from cooking dinners to having coffees with your favourite authors, manuscript assessments, creating research databases, book club visits, signed copies of books, personal letters, Skype air time, and get togethers. In a time of such sorrow and loss, too vast to fathom, it was heartening to see the goodness in people rise.

My experience of the auction was basically ugly crying at my laptop or on my phone every time I checked my Twitter notifications. I offered two auction items: to send to my highest bidder, anywhere in the world, a personalised signed first edition copy of The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart, which you can’t find in bookshops, and, to name a character after the highest bidder in my second novel (currently writing). Readers came out in force and raised just shy of $1,000 for the two items.

As for the total tally raised by the auction, the figure is still being collated.

Biggest thanks to everyone who auctioned, everyone who bid, and to all organisers.
